The "City of Cleveland I" was built in 1880 and was the first vessel to go through the new Weitzel Lock in 1881. At the time she had been chartered to the Lake Superior Transit Company. In February 1885 her name was changed to the "City of Alphena". When she was sold to the Cleveland-Buffalo line, she was renamed the "State of Ohio"
